halfbody pieces are always interesting since i need to think of a seamless way of only showing half of the character and have it not look awkward. submerging their bodies in water is probably the technique i use the most (sometimes regardless of whether they look like they should be in water or not).
luckily, this character was a kelpie and quite at home in a swampy environment. tails are not usually included in these types of commissions, but sometimes you just gotta have them there for compositional balance!

this was one of the first few pieces done during my transition from medibang paint to photoshop. it was really fantastic practice as there were so many different elements and textures in the piece that i needed to figure out new techniques for rendering.
i’m always a sucker for winged characters and mountainous landscapes, so this was super fun to paint up!
i’ve always had a thing for deers on fallen trees. i wanted to create a sort of magical, enchanted feel for this piece. commission for sordid-dessert of their character, celena.
personal piece from the latter half of 2018. i took a brief break from art before i made this as i was overseas for a psychology conference. during that time i had this idea come to me and i remember frantically scribbling it down next to my notes during the lectures.
i can’t remember what those lectures were about anymore, but i’m happy that this idea remained clear enough through my notepad doodles to have ended up a fully rendered piece.
fullbody illustration for effloret on deviantart. a recent visit to a local comic convention saw me spend hours browsing through the artist alley. i saw many wonderful artworks of dragons and later that week the composition for this piece came so vividly into my mind.
initially, i had planned to paint up the idea for a personal piece, but then i remembered a commissioner had a character that would be the perfect subject for it. and thus, this painting was born!
brown deer with wings dancing with swans. the idea for this piece randomly came to me as i was falling asleep. i quickly got up and sketched it out that same night, but didn’t touch the sketch for a while after that.
unfortunately, once i finally got the chance to complete it, the idea had disappeared. it took me a while to figure out where i wanted to go with this piece after that. but eventually, after much staring and pondering, i think i managed to paint something nice up.

halfbody illustration of the commissioner’s galaxy canine character. i often struggle a bit with creating a composition for darker characters. i remember i was in a medical centre waiting for my mum to finish her MRI scan as i was working through multiple sketch ideas for this one.
i also recently procured the official artbooks for the studio ghibli movies, spirited away and princess mononoke. i was absolutely enamoured by how the background artists rendered mossy rocks and was determined to include them in here.
fullbody illustration commission for laughingzuru on deviantart! their soft, fluffy dragon character looked perfectly suited for a autumnal scene. i overlapped warm lighting and autumn trees on top of a cool-toned forest to create the slight chilly feeling you get later in that season.
portrait commission. i’ve always had a soft spot for water-based dragons. on top of that, one of the things i find super aesthetically pleasing are lilies and lily pads floating on top of dark water. i love the way they speckle over the water’s surface and become so vibrant and bright when hit by sunlight. i wanted to incorporate that exact feeling and spotlighting into this portrait.

halfbody illustration for catwitches on deviantart! i’m personally not much of a book reader, but i can imagine having a good book underneath a tree beside a lake is pretty high on the list for relaxation.
personal piece. i love creating a sense of scale by including smaller creatures next to massive dragons. here two mythical winged beasts meet within a mountain lake.
i did initially have some problems with the colours in this piece. it erred more on the pink side at the beginning and i definitely had something different in mind. so there is a bit of colour editing midway through the process, but it did eventually all come together!
fullbody illustration for verlidaine on deviantart. i really wanted to do a big and grand environment for this one - something with mountains and giant waterfalls. this one was definitely a challenge in composition and perspective - something i’m still working on to this day. i utilised the speedpaint for this piece to briefly go over some of the tips and tricks i’ve picked up in recent year when it comes to doing backgrounds.
